Birchbox Review: March

I love trying out new things. Whether it’s a new egg-poaching method or venturing to a different bar at the weekend I will always be up for giving it a go. When it comes to sampling new skincare products, however, I’m often a little bit more cautious. Having been burdened with super sensitive skin I usually adopt a creature of habit pattern and stick to my reliable Simple skincare range.  As for make-up, a frantic run to Boots to replace the last drop of foundation I’ve been squeezing out for days is normally the extent of my thought process for cosmetic purchases.

So in a bid to tear me out of my comfort zone I decided to subscribe to Birchbox, the monthly sample-sized beauty gifts delivered to your door for just €16.50/month. A convenient treat to mothers who are constantly on the go but consider beauty as a low priority on their to-do list.

Let’s take a look and see what March box had to offer:

Arrow Boost Colour Enhancing Lip Balm

Arrow is Birchbox’s latest own-brand venture, and this may be my favourite product yet. As a huge lip-care lover, this pocket-sized paraben-free balm has an instant soothing and softening effect. It also adapts to the pH of your skin, enhancing the colour to best suit your complexion. Perfect paired with a quick lash of mascara for busy mums who prefer to sport a more au-naturel look.

Lanolips Rose Balm for Very Dry Hands & Nails

I’m a sucker for anything that includes shea (pronounced shay not shee-ah apparently) as an ingredient, as it guarantees to transform dry or cracked dermis into baby-soft skin. Made from 98% natural ingredients I had no qualms about testing this out on my delicate hands, which left them feeling enriched all day with its lasting protective veil. It is also designed to strengthen nails; which worked wonders on my post-acrylic damaged fingertips. And this ain’t no sample, you get the full-size product which is still a handy tube that pops right into your handbag.

Doux-me Face Mask

The last time I used a face mask was at my thirteenth birthday party while watching Mean Girls at a sleepover in my house. The reason that was the last time was because I was left with burning red cheeks until the next morning. But as soon as I saw marshmallow extracts listed on the Doux-Me packaging I wondered how could such a delicious component leave me less than satisfied. After a mere ten minutes of applying a thin layer, my face was glowing and feeling super smooth. I expected to have to slather on moisturiser afterwards as exfoliating products tend to fiercely tighten my skin, but this miracle masque contained moisturising properties too which did all of that for me. My inner thirteen-year-old was thrilled!

ModelCo More Brows

This is another quick-fix product I would recommend for mothers in need of an instant boost to the key facial feature: eyebrows.  The tinted gel thickens your brows for a fuller appearance and also sets the hairs to keep your preferred shape in place. Be careful not to apply too much though to avoid a cakey effect, as if your foundation accidentally smeared across your brows – major faux pas!

Amika Nourishing Mask

As wary as I am about skincare, I am the opposite when it comes to haircare. I will try anything that claims to give me sleek and shiny tresses. This mask boasts natural oils and vitamins, vowing to replenish split-ends and strengthen strands. Unfortunately, the treatment came in a small 20ml sachet and I require a lot more than that to stretch across my lengthy, dense, dyed mane. I did notice a slight silkiness after use but I would probably have to splash out on the €25 tub to reap the true benefits.

This Works Deep Sleep Pillow Spray

When you first register with Birchbox you can chose bonus products that you may wish to receive outside of your standard beauty range. This essential oils based liquid basically promises to act as a natural sedative by simply spraying it on your pillow. Despite being infused with two of my favourite scents, lavender and chamomile, I was sceptical as to how effectively a few spritzes would send me into the land of nod. I must say I did fall asleep a little faster but didn’t feel as refreshed in the morning like the 92% of positive responses before me who had sampled it. But maybe that’s more to do with waking up to a Monday morning than anything else. Perhaps it’s something my senses need to acquire to, but either way, I’ll continue to mist it over my bed linen purely for the floral addition of lavender scent to my bedroom.

Overall I was impressed with the March Birchbox and don’t plan on cancelling my subscription. You can change your product preferences at any time simply by logging onto www.birchbox.co.uk and editing the details on your account (this I did during the week after I noticed a few crows-feet beside my eyes, so requested some anti-aging products for April!). Boxes are shipped during the first week of every month and take about 10 business days to arrive. What better way to perk you up mid-month than a personalized package of beauty treats!
