Spring Capsule Wardrobe

Capsule wardrobes. Always thought it was something just for designers or the super-organised? Well, prepare to become a convert to the world of capsule collections. A year ago, with an ever-expanding shoe collection, and wardrobe hinges under serious strain, getting dressed was becoming far too large a portion of my morning routine. I’ll admit the suggestion of a capsule wardrobe was not one I initially welcomed – would I be expected to part with some of my much-loved threads? The answer is no (unless you want to be a super-human and combine the experience with a serious closet clean out). Capsule wardrobes don’t empty your wardrobe; they simply divide it into manageable portions.

So, full disclosure: the first part does require some organisation and discipline. Creating your capsule wardrobe involves choosing typically 20-30 pieces, which are going to last you for a season. That includes every layer, from t-shirts to jackets. And shoes. These items will be all you wear for the duration of Spring. Now don’t give up just yet. Although it seems scary, a streamlined wardrobe will make getting dressed so much more efficient – and, as you’re more likely to plan looks, you’ll be amazed at how you will style pieces together in completely new ways. Next: take a deep breath, and dedicate one Sunday morning to do the following:

  1. Create a space in your wardrobe. This will hold your pieces for the season. At the end of Spring, empty this space and fill it with your Summer capsule. Then Autumn, Winter, etc.
  1. Make a list. Decide how many t-shirts, tops, skirts, dresses, jeans, leggings, you think you’ll wear. If you’re struggling, leave out formal or event wear – you can let that one slide for the first attempt, until you get the hang of it. Don’t forget to include jackets and shoes.
  1. Lay out potential choices – choosing similar colours, or items that easily mix and match, will help your capsule last the season without you getting bored. Basic and staple pieces are your friend.
  1. Fix any holes, loose buttons, jammed zippers, scuffed shoes, etc. The last thing you want to discover mid-season is that one of your 30 pieces is unwearable.
  1. Don’t buy the perfect capsule! This defeats the purpose of the exercise, which is to try calm the chaos of your clothing choices. However, do take some inspiration from the following pieces for a spring capsule. And if it’s your first, maybe a little treat will help you get started!
